Running Up Against Roadblocks

When FreightPath was founded in 2024, it was not using a learning content management system (LCMS). Instead, the company created courses using a combination of internally developed and third-party logistics training content. Some contributors’ learning material was authored in HTML instead of the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) standard for learning management systems. Other training content was created using the Articulate Rise tool, a SCORM creator with limited functionality. Not only did this make it difficult to build out FreightPath’s course offerings; it also provided limited visibility to learners' journeys.

“We couldn’t do the things we wanted, and the assessments were super limited. So, we weren’t getting a lot of data about what our users were experiencing,” recalls Lacey Delgado, FreightPath executive vice president of learning and development. “We learned quickly that we needed one place to manage and create everything, and that led us to look for an LCMS.”

Accelerating Course Delivery

After evaluating offerings from several companies, FreightPath chose MadCap Software, which delivers a complete LCMS through MadCap Create authoring software for workforce training and MadCap SyndicateAI, a centralized content hub and orchestration layer.

“MadCap Create and MadCap SyndicateAI had the best resources for enabling us to update our courses for customers seamlessly without having to resend or re-upload everything. This was critical since we’re in a highly regulated industry, and regulations change quite frequently,” Lacey explains. “Create also had a lot more functionality than many competitors as far as interactivity, look and feel, flexibility, content re-use, and the ability to customize content to our own needs.”

Frank Maguire, FreightPath CEO, added, “MadCap SyndicateAI provided analytics across LMS platforms, giving us visibility into course performance regardless of where the content was deployed and allowing us to retain greater control over our content.”

FreightPath got started by engaging MadCap Software to train its teams in Georgia, Texas, California and India. Additionally, MadCap Software produced a script to import educational content from FreightPath’s previous authoring system into Create, helping to speed the migration.

“In the first 15 months since going into production with MadCap Create and MadCap SyndicateAI, we published 90 eLearning courses, each of which can take anywhere from an hour to over three hours to complete. It’s quite a lot of content,” notes John Alford, FreightPath executive vice president of customer success.

Enhancing Learners’ Experiences

The team now produces and updates courses in Create and then publishes them to the MadCap SyndicateAI hub. From there, MadCap SyndicateAI pushes content out to FreightPath’s LMS, Docebo.

“When users come to our website, they see courses on ‘cards’ displayed by the Docebo LMS,” explains Cory Spitler, FreightPath customer success manager. “Then once they click on a course card, it opens up the course running on MadCap SyndicateAI.”

In addition to delivering courses via FreightPath’s default landing page and LMS, the company also creates customized experiences for companies that want to have their own learning and development (L&D) programs. In these cases, MadCap SyndicateAI pushes content to the FreightPath LMS, where FreightPath provides a customized landing page with the customer's logo, imagery and text. The team also formats information contained in the landing page based on the customer's priorities.

“The seamless launch from the LMS and the experience of taking a course on MadCap SyndicateAI are very smooth. It’s a good experience for the learner,” Cory says.

FreightPath also ensures that lessons are interactive by taking advantage of features in Create, such as flip cards and assessments that check a learner’s understanding at different points in a course.

“The text in our courses can be detailed and complex, so we weave in as much interactivity as we can,” John observes. “MadCap helps us to make the experience for learners intuitive, interactive, and easy to navigate.”

Ensuring Government Compliance

The transportation and logistics industry consistently sees updates to government regulations and rules. FreightPath relies on Create and MadCap SyndicateAI to keep pace with these changes.

First, the team uses Create to revise the source document. Because Create takes a modular approach in which each lesson or topic in Create is a separate component, only the affected lesson or topic needs to be revised. Then, the Precision Publication feature in Create ensures the updates appear in all courses in MadCap SyndicateAI where that lesson or topic occurs. Next, these changes are instantly delivered from MadCap SyndicateAI to learners via “thin packages” that serve as live, streaming connectors to the different LMSs used by FreightPath and its customers.

“Say I have a lesson on ‘Border Tariffs’ that changes every day,” Lacey explains. “I can make an update within minutes in Create and get it out to any customer who has a thin package for MadCap Syndicate AI. It saves time, and our clients don't have to worry about updating anything on their end.”

Creating Customizable Courses

The same functionality in Create that helps FreightPath stay current with government regulations also enables the team to easily build new courses and customize them for different customers.

“If we need to build a new course for our customers, we use Create to put the topics or lessons they need into a course and then push that out into our template very quickly,” Lacey notes. “It’s a real time saver.”

Similarly, if a customer wants its own branded version of a course, the team can use Create to copy the content into a new course and tailor it for that customer. Then MadCap SyndicateAI can push it out to either FreightPath or the customer’s LMS as needed.

“I really like the modular aspect of Create,” Cory says. “You can also go into ‘publication history’ and quickly publish two versions of the same course into different outputs housed in MadCap SyndicateAI. It’s pretty seamless.”

Notably, MadCap SyndicateAI provides the ability to track learning experiences even if courses are being accessed through different customer LMSs.

“If we are sharing a thin package for MadCap SyndicateAI with a company that's using a different LMS, it allows us to see their scores and number of users,” Lacey explains. “It's a good way for us to control our product and know how it's being used, even if it's outside of our own systems.”

Earning Industry Validation

Since implementing MadCap Software to deliver its online courses, FreightPath has earned course approvals and endorsements from the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), a globally recognized organization dedicated to advancing supply chain professionals through education, career development, and worldwide networking opportunities.

“The look and feel of our courses developed with Create and the way we were able to modularize them definitely helped us to get CSCMP approval,” Lacey noted.

Since moving to MadCap Create and MadCap SyndicateAI, FreightPath has also earned U.S. Customs accreditation for 20-plus courses that count directly toward customs brokers’ annual continuing education requirements, helping them maintain their licenses.

“Customs brokers’ continuous learning has to be measurable,” John observes. “Our ability with Create to measure the amount of course content, its scope, and how long it might take to complete has helped us with that accreditation.”

John adds, “We’ve seen early success with MadCap Create and MadCap SyndicateAI, and we’re moving quickly to build on it.”
