MADCAP SOFTWARE USING XPS, FLARE, AND BLAZE TO ALTER THE PUBLISHING LANDSCAPE
MadCap Flare 2.5 and MadCap Blaze are vehicles for delivering Microsoft's revolutionary new XPS
documentation format
San Diego, CA, USA – May 2, 2007
— MadCap Software today announced
that it is coupling its technologies with those of Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) to change the
way that individuals and companies create and publish information. MadCap Software, the
leader in multi-channel content authoring, is promoting the natural link between
Microsoft's new XML Paper Specification (XPS) format and MadCap's growing arsenal of native
XML single-source documentation products. MadCap's applications include Flare for
multi-channel publishing to the Web, intranets, desktop systems, and print, and Blaze for
large-scale print documents.
"Microsoft is extremely excited with the work that MadCap Software has accomplished," said
Marcio Mello, XPS lead program manager at Microsoft. "We believe that XPS is a great format
for securely publishing and delivering content, and MadCap has compatible native XML content
publishing products in Flare and Blaze, which are perfect examples of how to take full
advantage of the latest technology offered through Windows Vista, 2007 Microsoft Office
System, and Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0."
"Microsoft and MadCap share a common vision of revolutionizing the world of documentation,"
said Anthony Olivier, MadCap Software CEO. "The promise that Microsoft brings with XPS is
widely recognized among our customers and the industry, and it is enormous validation of our
MadCap products that we are aligned with Microsoft in this endeavor."
About XPS
Microsoft's XML Paper Specification (XPS) describes electronic paper in a way that can be
read by hardware, software, and humans. With XPS, documents print better, can be shared
easier, are archived with confidence, and are more secure.
Microsoft has integrated XPS-based technologies into the 2007 Microsoft Office system and
the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system, but XPS itself is platform independent, openly
published, and available royalty-free. Microsoft is using XPS to bring additional document
value to its customers, its partners, and the computing industry.
About MadCap Flare
MadCap Flare is the first native XML content authoring application designed for the single-source,
multi-channel publishing demands enterprises face today. Bridging the gap between highly technical
documentation tools and popular, intuitive applications like Microsoft Word, Flare serves the needs
of documentation professionals and the growing number of business content owners, who are becoming
content authors.
Along with the 2007 Microsoft Office System, MadCap Flare 2.5 is one of the first content authoring
applications to allow users to publish information in the XPS format. With full support for Windows
Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office System, MadCap Flare 2.5 lets customers (1) create new projects
and import legacy content (including Word and FrameMaker); (2) enhance the Flare project, using the
latest state-of-the-art features that documentation professionals have come to expect; and (3)
generate the highest quality output through multiple online and print channels, including the XPS
format. In Flare 2.5, producing XPS content is literally just a matter of a single click of the mouse,
and Flare does the rest.
About MadCap Blaze
MadCap Blaze is the heir apparent to Adobe FrameMaker. Scheduled to be released in 2H 2007, MadCap Blaze
will allow individuals to create native XML documents in a modern editor and will be the ideal solution
for easily producing very long documents for print—such as books, manuals, and illustrated guides—using
the latest technological advances possible. Among the many output options available will be both XPS and
PDF.
For years, authors have had to choose between ease of use (e.g., Microsoft Word) or the power to handle
very large documents (e.g., Adobe FrameMaker). Now, with MadCap Blaze, authors have a complete package:
ease of use, power to create long documents, flexibility, and an eye toward the future.
