Applying Structure to an Unstructured World
In this presentation, we will explore the principles of structured writing and unstructured writing, with a specific focus on applying these principles to Help Authoring Tools (HATs). Technical writers often follow structured writing methodologies when creating and maintaining documentation. However, they may not realize that these same principles can be effectively applied to their work with HATs.
By understanding the benefits and techniques of structured writing, technical writers can enhance the usability and efficiency of their HAT-based documentation. This presentation aims to provide technical writers with valuable insights and practical tips to optimize their use of HATs through the application of structured writing principles.

Migrating to DITA - Managing Change
Join us on a transformative journey to explore the intricacies and eventual satisfaction of migrating to the Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA). Drawing from real-world experience in transitioning from FrameMaker to DITA for a medical device manufacturer, this presentation offers valuable insights, step-by-step guidance, and crucial lessons learned during the migration process.
The session begins with an overview of existing content structures and documentation practices, ensuring readiness for DITA adoption. We'll delve into the implementation of structured writing principles, including topic-based authoring and modular content, to enhance content management and collaboration while facilitating content reuse across multiple outputs. Along the way, we'll address common pitfalls and share practical tips to navigate challenges, such as managing resistance to change and securing stakeholder buy-in.
By the end of the presentation, attendees will be equipped with a comprehensive roadmap to confidently approach their own successful migration to DITA, optimizing content management, collaboration, and efficiency in the structured world of technical communication.
