MadCap Create FAQs
MadCap Create
What is MadCap Create?
MadCap Create authoring system is a powerful, collaborative authoring platform that simplifies reuse, maintenance, and personalization at scale by structuring and storing content in flexible XML, so it can easily be linked and reused in any number of outputs, formats, and iterations without duplicating efforts.
Is Create multi-lingual?
Translations for your content can be managed and output in 29 languages directly in Create, including Asian and right-to-left languages.
What types of rich media types are supported?
Virtually any type of image, video, audio file, or HTML5 animation can be uploaded to the media library and used in your learning content.
Do you support AICC?
Yes. MadCap Software can output AICC AGR 10-compliant packages.
How do you handle language translation?
There is a workflow process that allows you to manage the full cycle of internal or external translation processes. If you use third-party tools or services, you can export content for translation and then update the original course with new languages. We provide visibility into the changes between versions in the master language, which helps lower translation costs.
Are you 508C-compliant?
Yes. Courses created in MadCap Software can be published to be 100% 508C-compliant.
Is the XLIFF (XML localization interchange file format) standard supported?
Yes. From MadCap Software you can export the master document to XLIFF, get it translated, and reimport it back to create the translated version. You can manage as many translations of the same content as you want.
Can you import MS Office documents into Create?
Yes, this is a standard feature of our applications. Within Create, the import tool automatically creates fully structured documents, including images and media, which are automatically stored in the MadCap Software media repository.
Can you import from rapid authoring tools, like Articulate Storyline and Adobe Captivate into Create?
Yes. Authored content can be brought into MadCap Software documents in their original format.
What other formats can be imported into Create?
Virtually any format of existing content can be imported into MadCap Software , using our XML import. The structure and consistency of the source content will determine how much effort will be required.
Can document imports be done in bulk?
Yes, bulk import is supported.
I want authors to be able to preview, but not publish. Is this possible?
In Create, the ability to publish and deploy content is a privilege that can be removed from a user account through the use of a role. With Create app access, an author can preview and publish. To remove the ability to publish, assign a role or roles to the user that do not include the Publish / Deploy Content privilege. At this time, Create Desktop does not recognize the application of the privilege via the role in order to remove publishing from the account.
I understand that Create builds XML behind the scenes. Can I make edits to the XML?
There is no way to make edits to the XML inside the system. While there may be legitimate reasons to edit the XML (for example, translation), we generally discourage the practice. One small mistake in the XML can render it inoperable and inaccessible.

What are the benefits of separating content from presentation?
First, reusability. Separating content from presentation allows for great reusability of content. With the content stored as individual components inside MadCap Create, it can be reused and repurposed for various output formats, including print, web, mobile, eLearning, and more. This eliminates the need to create separate content for each output, saving time and effort.
Second, consistency. When content is separated from presentation, it is easier to maintain consistency across all output types and formats. Updates and changes can be made to the content in a single location, and those changes will be reflected across all outputs. This ensures that the content is accurate, both in terms of look and feel, and in the content itself.
Third, efficiency. Separating content from presentation can lead to greater efficiency in the content creation process. Writers and subject-matter experts can focus on creating high-quality content without being bogged down by formatting and layout concerns. In turn, designers can focus on creating visually appealing layouts without having to worry about content. This can lead to faster turnaround times, a more efficient creation process, and a much more immediate update workflow.
What formats can you publish?
MadCap Software supports a wide variety of output types and file formats, including:
- eLearning (HTML5, SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, AICC)
- Guides, user guides, and handouts (Word Documents, PDFs, HTML5)
- Presentation slides (PowerPoint presentations, PDFs, HTML5/Online Slides)
- Performance support (Word Documents, PDF, HTML5)
- Raw data (XML + media)
How can authors collaborate in your system?
MadCap Software includes robust collaboration features that allow team members to work together on content creation. These include real-time browser-based editing, content component level checking-in/out, review, assignments, commenting, and version tracking.
As a content creator, how can I get feedback from internal and external sources?
MadCap Software includes a collaborative, web-based content review system inside of MadCap Create. Content owners may initiate a review and invite internal and external reviewers via a system-generated email. The collaborative review provides all reviewers with a system to highlight, comment, and reply to other reviewers' comments in a conversation-styled review experience. Additionally, comments can be flagged for implementation, rejected, or marked completed.
Can I tag my content objects with metadata?
Yes, you can tag your content objects with metadata in MadCap Software. This is one of the key features of the platform, and it allows you to add descriptive information and tags to your content that can then be used for search, filtering, and organization. Additionally, you can define custom metadata fields and values to meet your enterprise needs.
At what levels can you reuse content?
MadCap Software provides several levels of content reuse, from individual content objects to entire documents or projects. At the most granular level, you can reuse individual content components, such as images, text, tables, or videos. These components can be recombined like building blocks into larger content objects like topics or lessons.
Can I search for content to reuse within my own document?
Yes, you can search for content to reuse and link into your own projects in MadCap Software. The platform indexes its entire library and includes a powerful search engine that allows you to search by keyword, metadata, or other custom criteria. This makes it easy to find and reuse existing content within your own projects, saving you time and effort, while providing efficiency and consistency at the enterprise level.
