Break Your PowerPoint Habit! Use MadCap Flare to Emulate Slides and Handouts

Nita Beck, Tech Comm Strategist and Flare Consultant at Nita Beck Communications will show you how to use MadCap Flare to create HTML5 output that emulates PowerPoint slides, as well as PDF output for handouts. It's a great way to single-source content already being used in instructor and student guides generated from Flare. For the slides (HTML5 output), we’ll cover how to: • Set up the master page, including navigational elements such as buttons. • Design CSS to emulate a PowerPoint theme, while also being responsive. • Craft images with a combination of MadCap Capture and other graphic tools. • Choose the best HTML5 target type for your presentation needs. For the handouts (PDF output), we’ll cover how to: • Design several page layouts, some that emulate PowerPoint handouts and others that don’t, because why not get creative? • Add a new stylesheet medium for the handouts’ styles. • Set up the PDF target(s). We'll also create a PDF target for the slides themselves. A copy of the Flare project will be available after the conference.

Advanced Workshop 24:00 - 5:30

Build-A-Book: An Exploration of MadCap Flare Features for Building PDF Manuals

In this workshop, Nita Beck, Tech Comm Strategist of Nita Beck Communications will guide us through various MadCap Flare features and share her best practices for designing great looking, easy-to-navigate manuals in a PDF format. We’ll work from the inside out, starting with chapters and appendices. Then, we’ll add the next layer at the front—tables of contents (including lists of figures and tables) and a couple of layers at the back—a glossary and index. Finally, we’ll wrap the book up with front and back covers. On the way, we’ll encounter many Flare file types, including page layouts; topics with various proxies and keywords; stylesheets with print-centric CSS including fonts and auto-number formats; TOC files (with which we’ll control things like page breaks); snippets, variables, and conditions for variant output; and, of course, the PDF targets themselves. We’ll wrap up by looking at Flare’s ability to automatically add a table of contents, glossary, and index to print output, instead of crafting these components from scratch.
