Advanced Techniques for Great Landing Pages

Landing pages are an important navigation tool that helps guide users towards the information they need within HTML5-based output. As well as being an essential part of the table of contents, they can also be linked to Micro Content and targeted by context-sensitive links from a software application. In this session, you'll learn a range of advanced techniques for enhancing your landing pages and making them work brilliantly on a range of devices. Matthew Ellison, Director or UA Europe will cover Responsive Layout, Flexbox Layout, mouseover animations, menu proxies, and demonstrate how to use jQuery to pull in descriptions from other topics.

Tuesday

Track 22:50 - 3:50

Tips for Creating a Documentation Portal

In this presentation, you'll learn a range of advanced techniques for creating an HTML-based portal that enables your users to browse and search all of your documentation, even if it has been sourced from multiple MadCap Flare projects. Matthew Ellison, Director or UA will walk you through how to optimize navigation both within and between documents, how to design and implement an effective and responsive Home page, and how to enable your users to easily download a PDF version of the full document for the topic that they’re currently viewing. Finally, we’ll discuss the various options for merging the outputs for multiple projects and will demonstrate a solution that works for both Top Navigation and Side Navigation skins.

Wednesday

Advanced Workshop 18:00 - 9:00

Advanced Customization of the TopNav and SideNav Skins Using CSS

The skin editors provided by MadCap Flare enable you to customize a range of visual aspects including colors, fonts, and icons. However, many useful and exciting effects can be achieved by hand-coding the appropriate advanced styles into your topic stylesheet. This presentation shows you how to achieve a range of special effects including different colored borders beneath each of the Top Nav menus, additional text, and logos within the Header bar, and the flexibility to omit specific topics from the Top Nav or Side Nav menus even though they are included within the TOC. You will learn how to use Chrome Developer Tools to identify the required styles, as well as how to use some key CSS techniques to implement the effects.
