Program Lead, Queensland Health

Kylie Hughes is a Program Lead for a large Queensland Government Department in Brisbane Australia. She is an innovative and passionate advocate of quality training design and delivery in a rapidly changing 21st century. She believes good quality - learner centric training is created when instructional designers stop developing information and start developing learning experiences. She has developed a Blended Learning Model that effectively integrates technology, design and people which enables individuals and business units to achieve their organisational training goals and objectives utilising leading edge technologies and best practice training methodologies. Kylie’s other key achievements include: • Modifying the ADDIE Instructional Design model to incorporate face to face training and development of an online help centre. • Over 10 years training facilitation and materials development experience. • Transition a payroll department from paper-based step by step instructions to an online portal using MadCap programs. • Redesign of training delivery from a passive approach to a blended learning approach. • Coaching and mentoring training teams to effectively deliver virtual training using WebEx Training Centre. In addition, Kylie holds a Bachelor of Education, Certificate IV in Training & Assessment & Agile Prince 2 certification.

A Modified Approach to the ADDIE Instructional Design Model

Don't put the horse before the cart! Use a modified approach to the ADDIE Instructional Design Model to incorporate face to face training and development of MadCap Flare HTML5 projects. When developing training packages or online help projects it is critical to ensure appropriate planning is completed to increase the usability and success of any MadCap projects. The ADDIE Instructional Design Model covers the end to end process for developing successful training packages (face to face, virtual or eLearning). A – Analysis, D – Design, D – Develop, I – Implement, E – Evaluate. A critical error many rookie instructional designers make is poor planning. They jump straight in at developing a training package without spending the time to plan. This significantly impacts the quality of the end product and increases the risk that the end-users will reject the initiative.

Track 14:20 - 5:20

The Blended Learning Model & MadCap Flare

As Program Lead at Queensland Health, Kylie Hughes has 10+ years of experience designing and delivering effective classroom, virtual and eLearning training for systems based training. When they purchased MadCap Flare approximately two years ago, they had no prior experience using the tool. They previously had been using a published HTML5 project but, that was it. Kylie’s challenge was to learn how to use the tool effectively to design and develop an online platform that would support 900 staff to use three different software programs. She designed a Blended Learning Model that integrated best practice training methods and adult learning principles: Technology - Virtual Training (WebEx), eLearning (Video, simulations, and training) and Multimodal (MadCap Online Help). Design – Scenario based training, Active Learning and Micro Learning People - Face 2 Face training, Peer 2 Peer training, and Self Directed Learning. MadCap Flare being the main tool to bring every element together in a single location.
