Strategies for Creating Compelling, Useful Images to Improve Content

Images provide an opportunity to improve context and understanding for content and instructions. However, most technical writers do not have any background in graphics or design and most individuals or teams don’t have a graphic designer available to them. This session provides tips and strategies for how writers can learn to make easy, useful, images that are visually appealing and improve audience understanding. Strategies will be provided, based on graphic design principles, which includes tips like the following: 1) When to add images (and when not to), 2) Adding callouts to images in visually appealing and informative ways, and 3) How to intentionally crop images with both information, intent, and design considerations.

Shift Content from Information to Education with Instructional Design Principles

From organizing content to writing individual topics, applying instructional design principles to technical writing can help users find the information they need, follow instructions more successfully, and retain instructions for future use and understanding. This session covers strategies for taking content from an encyclopedic or isolated-tasks perspective and shifting towards connecting ideas and educating users. With simple tips, like choosing where to add links and when, and more complex strategies like structuring content in both PDF and HTML/online formats to support finding information and acquiring skills, this session provides actionable strategies for improving content.
