The Organized MadCap Method: Best Practices on Maintaining Consistent Documentation

Presented by: Caroline Coyne, Eloise Lewis

If you work as part of a team, you’ll know how easy it is to forget who was going to check for broken links or who is publishing this week. It’s even more difficult when you’re all in different offices and work different hours! Not to mention the challenges of following specific guidelines to ensure your documentation is consistent, such as word capitalization or instructing users to ‘select’ or ‘click’. In this session, Caroline Coyne and Eloise Lewis cover how to use a Flare project for your internal processes and guidelines so that writers old and new know what writing styles and preferences to use and how to carry out all their routine tasks. You’ll also see how setting up a schedule for publishing Flare projects makes it easy for everyone to see what they need to do and when. Essential for writers and managers alike, this session will help you ensure that nothing gets forgotten and you know exactly who is responsible for each task.

Advanced Customization of the Top Navigation Menus using CSS in MadCap Flare

Presented by: Matthew Ellison

Using MadCap Flare's Top Navigation output, Flare users can now produce user assistance in the form of a sleek, modern website. The skin editors provided by Flare enable users to customize a range of visual aspects including colours, fonts, and icons. However, there are many useful and exciting effects that can be achieved by hand-coding the appropriate special styles into your topic stylesheet. This presentation shows you how to achieve a range of special effects including different coloured borders beneath each of the Top Nav menus, a side bar indicating the current topic in the side menu, and the flexibility to omit specific topics from the Top Nav or Side Nav menus even though they are included within the TOC. You will learn how to use Chrome Developer Tools to identify the required styles, as well as how to use some key CSS techniques to implement the effects.

Snippets, Conditions, and Variables in MadCap Flare — A Powerful Trio

Presented by: Ken De Wachter

At Collibra, user documentation is written for a very comprehensive software product. The product is extremely versatile and adaptable to our clients’ needs, and our documentation needs to be flexible as well. Oftentimes, writers have to differentiate between several user types (regular users, administrators, etc.), as well as different licensing models for various features with overlapping functionality. As such, snippets, variables and conditions form a crucial part of Collibra’s MadCap Flare projects. At the crossroads of these features, beautiful things happen. Learn how snippets make full use of conditions to automatically show or hide content, and how the content itself changes thanks to the use of variables. In this workshop, Ken De Wachter will show you how the team at Collibra used MadCap Flare to make their documentation more efficient and flexible.
